The application of microbial toxins for supression of mites in stored products

Project goals

The mites are serious pest of stored products. They contaminate stored food by allergen and chemical contaminants increasing the food safety. The microbial toxins seem to be alternative to organic pesticides in the mite suppression. The aims of this project are following (i) the screening of natural occurrence of pathogenous microorganisms (Bacillus thuringiensis and Xenorhabdus) in the cultures of mites; (ii) the analysis of proteolytic conditions for activation/inactivation of Bt toxins in mite gut; (iii) screening the toxic activity of microorganisms and their toxins against 4 model species of stored product mites. The main output of the project will be the microbial toxins active against mites for their future application in stored product protection.

We proved the toxic effect of entomopatogenous bacteria Bt var. tenbrionis to stored product and hosue dust mites. The incorporation of the bacteria into mite diet suppressed mite population growth. Based on the color changes ingested pH indicators in tthe gut of mites we assumed that pH of mite mesodeum is in the range from 4 to 7. ....
