Characterization of porcine gastroenteric viruses as a primary source of environmental and food contamination.
Project goals
In the suggested project, we will monitor and characterize pathogenic and commensal viruses shed into the external environment through faeces of infected pigs and extend basic knowledge on prevalence of the monitored viral species. We will particularly focus on rotaviruses, coronaviruses, hepatitis E virus, astroviruses and caliciviruses. Viral typing with the use of molecular virology methods and quantification of the shed viruses will be important criteria for the future transmission risk assessment of an infection either back to a susceptible, specific host, or to people working in the primary production of pork, or secondary contamination of water and foodstuffs. Solving the suggested project will extend knowledge of primary sources and spread of viral pathogens shed through pig gastroenteric tract and will result in obtaining basic information for further risk assessment of secondary contamination of foodstuffs. Due to the fact that methods for monitoring of gastroenteric viruses will be develope

Project name in Czech
Charakteristika gastroenterálních virů prasat jako primární zdroj kontaminace životního prostředí a potravin.
Annotation in Czech
Cílem je získat ucelený přehled výskytu živočišných virů prasat se zoopatogenním potenciálem, které by mohly mít význam pro kontaminaci potravin v procesu primární a sekundární produkce.

Project results evaluation
The project aim was to obtain a comprehensive overview of pig viruses with a zoo pathogenic potential which may be significant in food contamination during the primary and secondary production process. The project developed as planned, both the planned activities and outputs were fulfilled. The project funds were spent in keeping with the contract.
