Analysis of the genetic relationship among the longevity, fertility and characteristics of udder health and limbs in cattle and sheep

Project goals

The aim of the project is to analyse genetic and nongenetic relationships among functional traits, udder health and limbs characteristics in cattle and sheep. On the basis of analysis the methodology for prediction of breeding values of longevity, fertility and characteristics of udder and limb health will be proposed. Subsequently summary index will be designed for functional traits and health characteristics of dairy cattle and recommended the methodology for sheep longevity breeding values prediction. Those steps will establish the requirements for successful breeding of dairy cattle on resistance on the udder and limbs diseases, and eventually other health disorders; and methodology of information collection will be stated.

    Projekt si klade za cíl vyhodnotit genetické a negenetické vztahy mezi funkčními vlastnostmi u skotu a ovcí: dlouhověkostí, plodností a znaky zdraví vemene a končetin. Na základě těchto analýz bude navržena metodika odhadu plemenných hodnot pro dlouhověkost, plodnost krav a pro znaky zdraví končetin a vemene u dojeného skotu. Následně bude vytvořen souhrnný index pro funkční vlastnosti a znaky zdraví u nás chovaných dojených plemen skotu. U ovcí a masného skotu bude hodnocena především dlouhověkost a budou vytvořeny metodické postupy pro vyhodnocení dlouhověkosti. Tím budou vytvořeny předpoklady pro šlechtění v ČR chovaných plemen skotu a ovcí na dlouhověkost, u dojených plemen skotu také na plodnost krav, odolnost proti onemocněním vemene a nemocem končetin.

    The results of research activities (such as evaluation of longevity of beef cattle, procedures for genetic evaluation of sheep, estimate of breeding values for longevity in dairy cattle, use of the linear model of genetic evaluation of cloven hoofs diseases and incidence of clinical mastitis in dairy cattle, analysis of factors influencing the fertility of beef cattle, innovation of breeding procedures in the framework of international evaluation of calving difficulties and weight in beef cattle parturition, genomic evaluation of dairy cattle fertility, etc.) are documented by speeches delivered at international conferences (9x), certified methods and methodological guidelines for breeders´ associations in the planned quantity (3x). For this purpose, also a software (cow health index) was developed.
