Innovation of maize cropping systems using intercrops to reduce soil degradation and improve water management in changing climate

Project goals

The aim of the project is to design systems for cultivation of maize with sowing of intercrops or sowing of maize with other crops (mixed crops). Their soil-protection effect (surface runoff, selected soil properties), organic matter balance and effect on production (yield of silage biomass) and the economics of cultivation will be evaluated. During the course of the project, intercrops (mainly from the group of legumes, clover and grass) will be selected, suitable for various soil-climatic conditions. Maize management practice will be designed to determine appropriate date for sowing of intercrops and to modify fertilization and weed management systems. Part of the solution is the development and construction of a multifunctional machine for sowing intercrops into maize.

Inovace šetrných systémů pěstování kukuřice s využitím podsevových plodin k omezení degradace půdy a zlepšení hospodaření s vodou v podmínkách měnícího se klimatu

  • Annotation in Czech

Cílem projektu je navrhnout systémy pěstování kukuřice s výsevem podsevových meziplodin či výsevu kukuřice s jinými druhy plodin (smíšené kultury). Bude vyhodnocen jejich půdoochranný efekt (povrchový odtok, vybrané půdní vlastnosti), bilance organické hmoty a vliv na produkci (výnos silážní hmoty) a ekonomiku pěstování. V průběhu řešení projektu budou vybrány podsevové plodiny (především ze skupiny luskovin, jetelovin a trav), vhodné do různých půdně-klimatických podmínek. Bude navržena pěstební technologie kukuřice, kde bude stanoven vhodný termín výsevu podsevové plodiny, výsevek, systém hnojení a regulace plevelů. Součástí řešení je vývoj a konstrukce multifunkčního stroje pro zakládání podsevů plodin v kukuřici.

Completed project evaluation

  • Provider evaluation

V - Vynikající výsledky projektu (s mezinárodním významem atd.)

  • Project results evaluation

All the planned results were achieved as planned, with a number of additional results obtained beyond the plan, which were closely related to the project implementation. The results of the project are definitely very useful for agricultural practice, namely for improved soil conservation and quality, even though the results showed some, relatively insignificant, yield reductions which are, however, more than compensated by the effects on soil conservation. The use is also supported by the design of a multifunctional piece of equipment developed under the project.
