Influence of Seal Leakage Flows Interactions on Steam Turbine Efficiency

Project goals

The detailed study of the seal leakage interaction with the main flow, especially in the High- and Intermediate pressure steam turbine stages, is the aim of the project. It is mainly a systematic research of this complex flow by the numerical and experimental approaches. The goal of the research is description of flow structures, formulation of loss model and design of the new turbine stage seals structures. With the new approach the stages efficiency is believed to increase of 0.2 – 0.5% depending on a specific stage conditions.

Vliv interakce proudění z ucpávek na efektivitu práce stupňů parních turbín.

  • Annotation in Czech

Cílem projektu je detailně prostudovat vliv interakce proudění z ucpávek s hlavním proudem zejména v případech vysokotlakých a středotlakých dílů parních turbín.

  • Project results evaluation

The main goals of the project were met by the solution and the expected results were achieved. The project design assumed an increase in the internal efficiency of turbines by 0.2 - 0.5%, which would lead to significant savings in primary energy. The measurement of the analysis of the effects on efficiency is dealt with in a detailed study attached to the Final Report, but the evaluation of the actual change in efficiency is not explicitly stated in it. The reason may be that the measurements were not performed on real turbines, but on models and functional samples. However, it can be stated that the invested funds were spent efficiently and will lead to significant savings in primary energy and also to a probable increase in competitiveness. Application and use of the results is ensured for all project participants.
