    INFLUENCE OF ICE ACCRETIONS ON AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF AIRFOIL

    An investigation was performed, by means of low-speed wind tunnel testing, to study the effect of different ice accretions on NASA MS(1)-0317 airfoil with Fowler flap. The cases studied covered very different icing conditions. The ice accretion was simulated by placing strips of different shapes in the region of expected accretion. The influence on basic aerodynamic characteristics and on pressure distributions was evaluated for each case. The potential consequences of the icing phenomenon at differentconditions to flight performance and consequently the safety of general aviation aircraft are evident.
