Corrosion simulator: A useful tool for characterization of galvanically coupled materials behaviour under thin electrolyte film

  • Original language description

Corrosion behaviour of galvanically coupled materials under thin electrolyte film was simulated using BEASY Corrosion Manager software. As an example, a simple model of aluminium, mild steel and galvanized steel coupled in the form of bolted plates was modelled. The most important step of the process was specifying input parameters represented by polarization curves because the curves should accurately describe the behaviour of the materials used in the modelled environmental conditions. The simulationresults based on all input data were expressed mainly as the distribution of corrosion potential and corrosion rate over the modelled surface. This allowed us to identify corrosion hot spots, i.e. places with the highest probability of galvanic corrosionattack. Our findings show promising application of corrosion modelling for prediction and prevention of the corrosion by galvanic coupling of materials in structures subjected to damp environment.
