Influence of the Kissing Bond Defect to the Fatigue Life in Friction Stir Welds of AA7475-T7351 Aluminium Alloy

  • Original language description

The Friction stir welding (FSW) is restricted only to non-safety critical aerospace components, because there is no reliable method for detecting kissing bonds (KB) which have significant effect on fatigue life. The effects of the KB defects on tensile and fatigue properties of 7475-T7351 friction stir welds have been quantitatively evaluated against welds without any flaws. Various KB defects were investigated with the aim of evaluating which defect geometry has no influence to the fatigue life of joined 6.35 mm thick plates. A critical value for KB geometry seems to be 0.3 mm in depth considering influence on fatigue life for investigated configurations. The paper presents additional results of micromorphologic analyses of the fatigue crack initiation.
