Inhibition of mild steel corrosion in pickling acids evaluted by weight loss and potentiodynamic measurements

  • Original language description

In this work, weight loss method and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to study the effect of organic inhibitors on mild steel corrosion in pickling acid. The inhibitors, which were developed within our project, were added to dilute hydrochloric acid individually or as a mixture of two inhibitors. Firstly, weight loss values were determined and inhibition efficiencies were calculated. Secondly, electrochemical parameters (corrosion potential and corrosion current density) were extrapolated from the polarization curves and inhibition efficiencies were calculated from the corrosion current density values. The higher the inhibition efficiency, the greater the reduction of corrosion; and consequently, the lower the evolution of hydrogen. The application of the most effective inhibitors is suggested for the reduction of hydrogen penetration into the bulk of steel during the pickling, i.e. for the prevention of adverse changes in mechanical/metallurgical properties resultin
