Improvement of CFD aerodynamic characteristics using modal deformation
Original language description
A CFD analysis of rigid NASA Common Research Model (CRM) was done. Large difference were noticed between the CFD and experimental data. It was observed that the model deformation has significant effect on the aerodynamic characteristics. The modal analysis of a wing of CRM was used to improve accuracy of CFD results. Six modes in total were used during CFD simulations. The results from this simulations showed that the addition of the wing deformation into the CFD simulation did improve the accuracy of obtained aerodynamic coefficients. This study is used as a definition of the methodology for improvement of the CFD results by using the elastic model. The results from the modal analysis and their application to improve the CFD results are the focus of this paper.
