Comparison of lightning data from the CELDN and the LINET detection networks over the Czech Republic territory in the 2010 convective season

  • Original language description

Lightning data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) have been utilized as additional remote sensing information for nowcasting and warning of convective storms since May 1999, when the CHMI established reception of lightning data from theCentral European Lightning Detection Network (CELDN). Over the last decade, a new lightning detection network known as the LINET was built throughout Central Europe. The CHMI obtained full real-time access to the LINET data during the 2010 convective season. The LINET data were provided for evaluation and for comparison with the CELDN data. The real-time access to the LINET data enabled not only statistical data evaluation but also comparison of the operational duties of the central and regional forecast offices. The comparisons demonstrated that the LINET network detects more lightning strokes than the CELDN network, primarily weak intra-cloud (IC) and positive cloud-to-ground (CG+) lightning strokes. The ratio of positive to negative
