Analysis of extraordinary smog situation by means of measuring complex of Tušimice Observatory
Original language description
The North-Bohemian basin belongs to the areas of the Czech Republic mostly affected by industrial pollution. In this region, smog situations have often occurred in recent decades, manifested by high concentrations of sulphur dioxide. Smog situations were caused by the temperature inversions that formed in this orthographically complex region during the winter. After the desulphurization of large power plants and the redevelopment of domestic furnaces, sulphur dioxide ceased to be a problem at the end of the 1990s, and the attention moved to suspended particles. The smog situation with high concentrations of sulphur dioxide, which was alerted on 5.11.2015, meant an unexpected and surprising return of this "old devil". The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute operates the Tušimice Observatory in the basin area, aimed on the assessment of industrial pollution (especially energy sources and mining activities). Its next task is to monitor the links between the air pollution level and the meteorological conditions. Under the Environment Operational Program, the existing Observatory infrastructure has been renewed and a monitoring program has been expanded, particularly in the area of monitoring and evaluation of suspended particles. Observatory measuring complex and air pollution monitoring data have been used for a comprehensive analysis of unusual smog situation mentioned above. It was demonstrated that the cause was not the accumulation of sulphur dioxide below the temperature inversion layer, but the breakdown of this inversion and the transport of pollution from higher levels to the ground.
