Climate change and the rising air temperature present a significant challenge for agriculture, particularly in livestock farming. This study evaluates heat stress in cattle, one of the key indicators of animal thermal comfort both in the past and under projected future climate conditions. The study analyses three parameters: (1) heat stress risk – potential discomfort, (2) heat stress risk – actual discomfort, and (3) number of days without heat stress risk. All parameters are derived from a thermal index that combines maximum daily temperature and relative humidity. Based on seven global climate models (GCMs) and four emission scenarios, future climate conditions were used to predict changes in these indicators. Results are presented as median estimates (50th percentile) and supplemented with the less likely scenarios (10th, 25th, 75th, and 90th percentiles) to reflect the degree of uncertainty. Historical data (1961–1990 and 1981–2010) describing risk changes and the number of days for all three parameters indicate that conditions have already been observed over the past two 30-year periods. Specifically, there has been an increase in heat stress risk and a decrease in the number of days without heat stress risk. Similar trends are expected under future climate conditions. The results suggest that climate change has had and will continue to significantly impact the living conditions of livestock, which requires adaptation of breeding strategies and increased attention to protecting animals from heat stress.
