SUSPENDED PARTICLES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SEM/EDX

  • Original language description

This study presents a robust methodological framework for the morphological and elemental characterization of suspended particulate matter (PM) using SEM/EDX at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. To overcome the limitations of traditional fibrous media, atmospheric particles are collected on flat-surface polycarbonate filters (Isopore™) using a low-volume sampler. Following gold sputter coating, samples are analyzed using a TESCAN MIRA3 FEG-SEM equipped with SE, BSE, and EDX detectors (Oxford Instruments). The analytical workflow integrates high-resolution imaging with automated Feature Analysis via AZtec software for image segmentation and chemical classification. Data post-processing is conducted through the proprietary Airity 8.0 application and structured within a PostgreSQL database. The results demonstrate the high potencial of this approach for source apportionment, providing qualitative and semi-quantitative insights into PM origin. Furthermore, the integration of AI-driven image analysis is identified as a key frontier for enhancing the identification of unique source-specific particle signatures.
