Flood marks 1890
Original language description
The “floodmarks 1890” app is the result of a field survey we conducted in Prague during the summer of 2025. The app was intended for participants of the “3rd Floods Working Group Workshop, Past Floods and Society,” but it remains valid even after the workshop has ended. It was based on the publication *FloodMarkes on the Vltava River in the City of Prague*, published by the Prague Waterways Directorate, Water Management Development Administration, in 1966. The author of the publication was J. Marhold, who, together with a group of colleagues, documented and surveyed the markers in 1966. These were primarily metal plaques indicating the 1890 flood level, the installation of which was primarily the work of Ing. Matyáš Machulka of the Imperial-Royal Governor’s Office. He did so with the approval and by order of Chief Building Councilor Karel Scheiner following the catastrophic flood of September 1890. For workshop participants, we made accessible the locations of the flood markers that remain in the field. We also strive to highlight the significant decline in the number of flood markers in Prague.
