Evaluation of Satellite-Based Fire Detection for Early Warning Systems in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Early wildfire detection is crucial for mitigating environmental and economic damage. The 2022 wildfire in Bohemian Switzerland National Park (České Švýcarsko) demonstrated the potential of satellite-based fire monitoring in the Czech Republic, as fire activity was detected eight hours before being officially reported to emergency services. This study evaluates the suitability of existing and emerging satellite-based fire detection products for integration into firefighter early warning systems. We conduct a comparative analysis of fire detection data from EFFIS (European Forest Fire Information System), FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System), and MSG FRP (Meteosat Second Generation Fire Radiative Power product) against ground-based firefighter intervention reports. A key methodological challenge lies in resolving spatial and temporal inconsistencies between satellite-detected fire events and firefighter intervention records, as the documented deployment locations may not directly correspond to the initial satellite-detected fire coordinates due to fire spread dynamics, detection latency, and differences in observational resolution and frequency. Accurately correlating these datasets is essential to assess the reliability of satellite-based fire detection for operational use. Preliminary results indicate that while current satellite-based products provide valuable large-scale fire monitoring, higher spatial and temporal resolution data from the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) missions are expected to further enhance detection accuracy and early warning capabilities. Although satellite-based wildfire monitoring systems are already operational globally, their effectiveness within the specific geographic and fire conditions of the Czech Republic has not yet been comprehensively evaluated. This study aims to determine the feasibility of integrating satellite-derived fire alerts into national fire management strategies and their potential benefit for emergency response systems in the region.
