Sudeten Mountains in the Czech Republic - growing conditions, regeneration and stabilization of mountain forests
Original language description
Sudeten is a system of east-west mountain ranges of northeastern Czech Republic bordering Poland. Most ranges is covered by artificially planted Norway spruce forests, which replaced original beech stands with sycamore maple and elm, fir-beech stands, and (in the higher elevation) spruce stands. Remnants of the native Norway spruce stands are still surviving in some places. Upper forest limit of the Sudeten region is in altitude between 1220 - 1300 m a.s.l., above that the dwarf pine bushes are located, followed by the Alpine vegetation. Woody species vegetation in the upper mountain sites is very important from the ecological view point, namely for its soil-protection and hydrological functions. Objectives of the submitted article are specifics of themountain site conditions, stabilization of the mountain forest ecosystems threatened by air pollution, and mountain reforestation problems.
