Náhradní porosty smrku pichlavého slouží v drsných horských podmínkách jako účinný kryt prosázeným jedincům buku lesního. Buky situované do krytu korun smrků vykazovaly lepší výškový růst než ty, které byly vysazeny v porostních mezerách.
