Long-term experiments with thinning of Scots pine stands in the region of Southern Moravia
Original language description
Scots pine is the second most important conifer in terms of tree-species share in the Czech Republic. Unlike spruce, the pine demands a different thinning approach in accordance with its biology and growth behavior. The response to thinning is slower andnot so strong compared to spruce. Three thinning experiments (Strážnice I, II and III) were established in 1962 in Southern Moravia. All series include a positive selection from above and an unthinned plot (control). Based on the last investigation in 2008, we can conclude that all thinning treatments led to higher survival compared to control. Control stand disintegration has started since age exceeded 50-60 years. Neither mean stem diameters, not dominant trees diameters were found to be significantly different at the age of 71-73 years. The only difference was found in periodic mean basal area. Dominant trees proved good stability in terms of value of slenderness ratio in both thinned (mean = 75) and unthinned (mean = 77) trees.
