The Šumava National Park, established in 1991, occupies approximately 69 thousand ha. Nearly 30 % of the whole territory belongs to unmanaged area. About 65 % of the total area (45 thousand ha) are of spruce forests, of which ca 25 % is situated in the unmanaged area. The outbreak of spruce bark beetle Ips typographus, which occurs on the territory of national park from its establishment, caused total damage on maternal forests (dying) and/or clear cuttings (in the ratio 1:1) on nearly 6.5 thousand ha of spruce forests until now, which means approximately 15 % of the spruce forests surface. Dynamics of the outbreak increased dramatically after the wind disturbances in 2007 (hurricane Kyrill) with its actual culmination in 2009.
