Growth and phenotypic characteristics of Norway spruce in the gene conservation unit in Orlice mountains (Czech Republic)
Original language description
The study was focused on one of the main domestic species of Central Europe, Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./ H. Karst.). In particular, the growth and phenotypic characteristics of various stands of the model gene conservation unit in the Orlické hory Mts. were observed. The gene conservation unit consists of three separate segments spaced 3.2–5.9 km apart. Its large area allows for a wider biodiversity and a wider range of natural conditions. It was proclaimed to preserve the valuable sub-population of spruce and its natural reproduction. The aim of the study was to investigate the differences in growth and phenotype of 523 spruces in 15 selected stands within the gene conservation units and its surroundings. Biometric data were measured and some qualitative features were visually assessed. Three parts of the gene conservation unit reach the best values of spruces at the Trčkov site. Most valuable stands are located in centre of each of three parts of the gene conservation unit. Apart of few exceptions, with the increase of the distance from centres, the production and the quality of the trees fall. However, natural conditions also play its role in assessing growth and phenotypic differences. The considerable distance of inferior quality trees from large-scale centres provide protection against their pollination. Leaving the central parts of the natural development will allow the preservation of high-quality genetic information and its transfer to neighbouring stands. The research will continue by comparing the results of the phenotypic characterization of the trees with the results obtained by analyses of their DNA.
