Cyclorhipidion bodoanum (Reitter, 1913) (Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Xyleborini) new to Britain

  • Original language description

During 2017, JL carried out a survey of saproxylic beetles in Sotterley Park, Suffolk (East Suffolk VC 25, TM4585) (Fig. 1). Amongst the beetles collected were three small (c. 2mm long) specimens of a bark beetle (Curculionidae, Scolytinae) which defied identification. He sent one of them to HM (Coleoptera Recorder for Suffolk) who recognised it as a species of Xyleborini new to Britain, but could not name it. The species was not represented in the national collection of Coleoptera (Natural History Museum, London (NHM)). One of the mystery Xyleborini was photographed by Harry Taylor at the NHM, and the resulting image (Fig. 2) sent to MK, a colleague in the Czech Republic, an expert on Scolytinae. He recognised it immediately as Cyclorhipidion bodoanum (Reitter), having recently co-authored a paper comparing three congeneric adventive species now found in North America; C. fukiense (Eggers), C. bodoanum and C. pelliculosum (Eichhoff) (Hoebeke et al., 2018). Because all three are adventive and may turn up anywhere, the key in the aforementioned paper and the highresolution images of each species should be used to confirm the identity of future Cyclorhipidion specimens found in Britain.
