FORESTS´ FUTURE 2022 - Consequences of Bark beetle calamity in Central Europe
Original language description
The meeting was organized under the auspices of Czech minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula. Conference focused on the development of the bark beetle calamity in the Central European countries and its foreseen impact on forestry sector, environment and community. 63 participants from 9 European countries discussed related topics in five conference sessions: i) The calamity – has it already passed?; ii) Ecology of post-disturbance areas – can we document negative effect of bark beetle outbreak on C sequestration, hydrology, soil erosion, biodiversity?; iii) Reproductive sources – are they sufficient in amount and species structure? Should we use non-native/introduced species?; iv) Silviculture – what kind of forest we want to have? How to start and continue on clearcut area?; v) Economy and Forest Policy – what are needs of forest owners and wishes of the public? Are the calamity consequences reflected on European level? A field trip was organized on last day (June 23rd) of the meeting with demonstration of new methods for reforestation of bark-beetle clear-cut areas with combination of pioneer and rare species and presentation of the impact of calamity on the water-collecting area close to Třebíč. Participants expressed the importance of cross-border communication of concerned issues as the calamity is endangering all of spruce forests in the CE region and potentially is threatening also Scandinavian countries in the future. The subsequent meeting should be organized in 2024 in closer cooperation with IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organization) and EFI (European Forest Institute).
