Timing of thinning in Scots pine stands in relation to stand growth and development

  • Original language description

This paper is a short report on the interim results of an ongoing study focused on the possibilities to positively influence stand stability in Scots pine. We investigated three groups of long-term thinning experiments initiated at different ages. Preliminary results have shown that the effects of thinning are not as significant as they are in Norway spruce stands. Nevertheless, it is clear that early initiation of thinning (up to age of 25 years) is an effective measure to improve the growth and stability of Scots pine stands.
