Activity Ratio 226Ra/228Ra as Indicator of River Bottom Sediment Radioactive Contamination due to Uranium Mining and Milling in Czechia

  • Original language description

Concentrations of natural radionuclides 226Ra and 228Ra were monitored in river bottom sediments. The natural background of these radionuclides and human activity affecting the water environment were evaluated. It turned out that the sediments are very good indicators of radioactive contamination, especially the 226Ra contamination due to former uranium mining and milling. The 226Ra contamination rate can be conveniently assessed using the 226Ra/228Ra concentration ratio.
