The response of the young of the year fish to river obstacles: Functional and numerical linkages between dams, weirs, fish habitat guilds and biotic integrity across large spatial scale
Original language description
Obstacles affect fish community structure, which represents a fundamental component of the biological integrity. However, a quantitative relationship linking the response of fish communities to obstacles is lacking. We assessed fish from a 54 study sitesacross hydrological network. The fish community was expressed as the probability of guild dominance. We examined the indicative value and responsiveness of two indices of biological integrity (EFI, CZI). We analysed two types of obstacles for which numerical and distance descriptors were derived using GIS. All obstacles together were the most relevant predictor of fish community. The negative impact on fish increased with the increasing number of obstacles and the decreasing relative distance. Our results contribute an prerequisite to river restoration, identifying where in the hydrological networks ecological studies or restoration actions would produce the most effective results.
