The 2017 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) guidelines for management of valvular heart disease - highlights and perioperative implications

  • Original language description

Eight years have passed since the first joint effort in developing practice guidelines by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). Initially working together in the scope of myocardial revascularization, their first joint valvular heart disease (VHD) guidelines were published in 2012. The 2017 joint VHD guidelines mark the first update since 2012, and are significant in their emphasis of new data in the field of percutaneous interventions as well as principles of risk stratification to aid physicians in the temporal planning of interventions.
