Major activities to support and promote children’s reading: experience from the Czech Republic
Original language description
The chapter presents major Czech projects aimed at supporting and promoting reading in children. Before proceeding to the projects themselves, results from reading surveys are briefly summarized. The Czech Republic takes part in international PIRLS and PISA surveys but also – under the auspices of the National Library of the Czech Republic – conducts national surveys. Given the results from the surveys which are far from satisfactory, Czech libraries work together on a number of projects with a simple and clear goal – to promote and support children‘s reading. Seven projects are described in more detail. These are Start Life with a Book (Bookstart), I Am Already a Reader – Book for First Grader, Night with Andersen, Where the World Ends, Pearl Hunters, Turning School Upside Down, and Children‘s Book Day.
