Ancient lamps in the Prague National Museum

The catalogue presents scholarly evaluation of lamps from old museum holdings that were not published in older studies and was enriched with new acquisitions that have come to the National Museum from the end od the 1970s until the present. The chapter of Greek and Hellenistic lamps comprised mainly lamps from last two centuries B.C. with watch-shaped body and two side lugs and without side lugs (Howland Type 45A, 48 E). Roman picture lamps with volute nozzle (Loeschcke Type I, IV) and factory lamps were mostly published in older studies, so the chapter is less representative. On the other hand, the Loeschcke Type VIII group of lamps, the variety with a heart-shaped nozzle covers a larger section of the catalogue together with African lamps. A large part of the catalogue is devoted to the Syrian-Palestinian lamps. There are mostly dated from the 5th to the 7th centuries.

Katalog představuje vědecké zpracování lamp ze starých fondů, které zůstaly stranou zájmu tehdejších badatelů a nebyly v předchozích letech publikovány, a také nových přírůstků, které přišly do sbírky Národního muzea od 70. let minulého století do současnosti. Poměrně rozsáhlá je kapitola věnovaná řeckým a helénistickým lampám a to zejména díky lampám posledních dvou století př. Kr. vyráběným z formy typu Howland 45 A a 48 E (s postranními výběžky a bez nich). Římské obrazové lampy typu Loeschcke I a IVa firemní lampy zdaleka nereprezentují sbírku Národního muzea, neboť byly již z většiny publikovány ve starších studiích. Na druhé straně lampy typu Loeschcke VIII, se srdčitým hořákem zaujímají větší část tohoto katalogu spolu s africkými lampami. Velká část je také věnována syrsko-palestinským lampám, většinou pocházejí z 5. až 7. století. Do kapitoly Miscellanea byly zařazeny lampy nejrůznějších tvarů a stáří, které se vymykají běžné klasifikaci.
