Boionautilus gen. nov. from the Silurian of Europe and North Africa (Nautiloidea, Tarphycerida)

  • Original language description

The genus Boionautilus gen. nov. is established for large Silurian tarphycerids (Nautiloidea) originally classified within the genus Nautilus. The taxon was widely distrubuted in tropical and subtropical seas of Avalonia, Baltica and Perunica, reaching also the somewhat colder waters of the North Gondwana shelf. B. tyrannus has been verified among cephalopods coming from the Ougarta Range, Algeria. Clearly expressed evolutionary trend expressed in the tighter coiling of the shell is well documented within the genus.

Boionautilus gen. nov. ze siluru Evropy a severní Afriky (Nautiloidea, Tarphycerida)

  • Czech description

Rod Boionautilus gen. nov. je stanoven pro velké tarfyceridy (Nautiloidea), původně řazené k rodu Nautilus. Taxon byl široce rozšířený v tropických a subtropických mořích Avalonie, Baltiky a Peruniky a zasahoval do poněkud chladnějších šelfových vod severní Gondwany. B. tyrannus byl zjištěn mezi cephalopody pocházejícími z Ougarta Range, Alžírsko. Dobře dokumentován je jasně vyjádřený evoluční trend vyjádřený těsnějším stočením schránky.
