The dating of the ornithological part of Quoy and Gaimard's "Voyage de l'Astrolabe"

  • Original language description

The first zoological volume of the Voyage de l?Astrolabe, containing mammals and birds, bears a title page date 1830. I assembled evidence that it was probably printed by March 1831, but that it was not published (made available to the public) before spring 1832. The Bibliographie de la France listed it as published on 5 May 1832 and this date is recommended as the official date of publication for the purposes of zoological nomenclature.
