An ancient lineage of slow worms, genus Anguis (Squamata: Anguidae), survived in the Italian Peninsula
Original language description
Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Italian slow worms (Anguis) form a distinct deeply differentiated mtDNA clade and nDNA cluster, which presumably diverged during or shortly after the basal radiation within the genus. In addition, the specimens assigned to this group show morphological differentiation from A. fragilis. Based on the uncovered differentiation, we propose to assign the Italian population species level under the name Anguis veronensis.
