Ancient Greek texts refer to Nubia as Aethiopia, Epics Iliad and Odyssey and a Cyclic epic Aithiopis give the earliest testimonies about this country rich in gold, ivory, ebony and iron. At that time (8th -7th centuries BC) in Nubia grows the Napatan Kingdom and Egypt is ruled by the Nubian dynasty. The interest in this area grows with the development of science and trade (6th century BC). Herodotus deals with Aethiopia in the spectre of events in Egypt until the Persian conquest. He was the first to give the description and name of the Aethiopian city of Meroe.The writings from the 4th century BC were preserved in the texts of later authors. Pliny the Elder brought testimony about authors of the 3th century BC, whose existence coincided with the beginning of prosperous times in the Meroitic Kingdom. The heart of Nubia was visited because of learning and trade probably on the initiative of the Ptolemaic court. Bion of Soloi´s itineraries are valuable for topographic data. Eratosthenes´
