Collections of the National Museum ? Náprstek Museum of African, Asian and American Cultures include a significant and interesting collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities that originated in an exceptional archaeological location ? Deir el-Medina and its environs, Western Thebes. Egyptian written and material culture left unique evidence in Deir el-Medina. The site, as well as the Prague collection, is closely connected with the life and work of Jaroslav Černý, Egyptologist, who left a lasting legacyin Czech, Czechoslovak, Egyptian, British and French Egyptology. Deir el-Medina is a renowned site ? a settlement of workmen, craftsmen and artists employed as builders of the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Queens in Western Thebes. There arefew sites in Egypt which may boast the unique combination of habitations, burial sites and written evidence in continuity, quality and quantity comparable to Deir el-Medina.
