Original language description
The article is devoted Bedřich Smetana's encounters with the legacy of William Shakespeare. It deals with his partitipation at the celebration of Shakespeareʼs 300th birthday in 1864 (he took part in the organization, dramaturgy, as a conductor and a composer) and with the possible sources of his knowledge of Shakespeareʼs plays. It desribes the circumstances of the genesis of the symphonic poem Richard III and of the piano composition Macbeth and Smetanaʼs conception of those worksʼ subject matter in relation to the shift of his artistic orientation towards programme music. On the basis of the correspondence, the study then examines the ups and downs of Smetanaʼs relationship with Eliška Krásnohorská and the composerʼs unfinished opera Viola.
