Investigation of Two Paintings from Jahangir Album from the Indian Collection of the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures

  • Original language description

Within the framework of the preparations for the exhibition Sultans of Deccan India, 1500-1700. Opulence and Fantasy, two folios with unique Indian paintings from the collection of the National Museum, specifically the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, were subjected to a technological and restoration investigation. The investigation's aim was to acquire new information relating to the origin of both paintings and to determine the degree of damage to the folios attributed to the renowned Jahangir's Album. The survey itself was conducted on a number of levels, with the aid of non-invasive analytical methods. The technique of painting decorations was documented, and partially also the pigments used, which broadened our knowledge of the painting technique at the Mughal court at the turn of the 17th century. At the same time, the study under a microscope revealed the signature of the painter Agha Riza and the monogram of an as yet unidentified author of the engravings with the patron saints of Italy. The work was concluded with the successful consolidation of the damaged paint layer of the paintings.
