Guitars in Karel Boromejský Dvořák's Collection

  • Original language description

Private collection of musical instruments of the Prague luthier, collector, and merchant K. B. Dvořák (1856-1909) belongs to one of the most important acquisitions in the history of the collection of the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music. To the scanty biographical data about his personality is added some newly discovered information. In the context of current organological research, an evaluation of seven guitars in Dvořák's collection is carried out. An exceptional place in it is represented by the instrument of probably the most famous Russian guitar maker I. Y. Krasnoshchekov. The main part of the text deals with guitars whose makers were probably misidentified. Their names remained in the professional literature without critical assessment until the beginning of the 21st century. In searching for the reason to rewrite or replace the labels on selected instruments, the author offers an answer in the contemporary cultural and social context of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
