A proposal for the mandatory registration of formal scientific names of fossil plants and algae
Original language description
For many decades, nomenclaturists and taxonomists have invested enormous efforts in building databases of scientific names of plants, fungi and algae to serve as resources for all users of taxonomic names.. This work has relied on generations of scholars painstakingly searching through published literature, tracing names back to the nomenclatural starting points for the various taxonomic groups covered under the International of Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. However, keeping these databases up-to-date presents a daunting prospect. Botanists, mycologists, palaeontologists and phycologists continually describe new taxa, and publish taxonomic revisions with new names. Yet this databasing struggle with current research outputs and face additional uncertainty when their compilers near retirement. If these crucially important databases are to keep up with the relentless pace of ongoing research productivity, then a new model for undertaking this work is required. The new model is in registration of new nomenclatural acts on-line in registration centres. The goal of the registration will be keeping the mentioned databases up-to-date with all current and future taxonomic research.
