Visual Waka Poems by Moronobu (Moronobu's Jisan Kachú)
Original language description
The rich collections of Japanese illustrated books of the National Gallery in Prague include a unique Anthology of Japanese Poems with Commentaries (Jisan Kachú) illustrated with black-and-white woodcuts by the founder of ukiyoe genre illustrations, Hishikawa Moronobu (1618-1694). The anthology compiled by Monk Sógi in the 15th century comprises 190 poems by noted poets of the 13th century. The sequence of ten poems by Princess Shikishi (Shokushi/Skihkishi Naishinó) is translated into Czech and Englishby the author. Illustrations use shortages, metaphors and symbols parallel to Japanese classical poetry and so the author coins a term waka-e or ?Japanese poetic illustration? to describe them.
