Portrait of hakim Shifai from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague in the context of the work of Riza-yi Abbasi, his workshop and epigones
Original language description
The portrait of hakim Shifai, poet and court physician of the Persian Shah Abbas I, is undoubtedly one of the foremost works in the Islamic art collection of the National Gallery in Prague. In style the painting unequivocally refers to the work of one of the greatest masters of Persian painting, Riza-yi Abbasi, who did in fact paint a portrait of Shifa’i, as was testified by Muin Musavvir. Today this original painting is considered to be lost, but three copies of it still exist in world collections and now a fourth can be added to them – the one from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague. The Prague portrait is historically the closest to Riza-yi Abbasi’s original and it also contributes new findings relating to the whole series of portraits of hakim Shifai.
