Between Abstraction and Surrealism: Toyen versus Ecole de Paris
Original language description
This paper focused on the Czech painters Toyen (1900-1980) and Jindřich Štyrský’s (1899-1942) and their engagement with the art and gallery scene in Paris during the second half of the 1920s. Their oeuvre was analyzed in parallel with the work of the others artists from the Czech Lands, who were part of the so-called School of Paris, an international artistic community active in Paris in 1918–1938. It permitted to show the originality of the approach of Toyen and Styrsky and of their artistic movement “Artificialism”, situated between Abstraction and Surrealisme.
