Importance of identification of organic colorants in artworks for the assessment of authenticity

  • Original language description

Identification of pigments and dyes is an integral part of the assessment of an artwork’s authenticity. Presence of synthetic organic colorants may be a clue for the determination of the time of origin of the artwork as time of discovery and production of these materials is usually well documented. During the first half of the 20th century most of the commercially important classes of organic colorants were discovered although first organic pigments were synthetized at the end of the 19th century. Phthalocyanine pigments (blue or green) are widely used on artworks – original or fake. Quinacridone reds and arylide yellows were identified on several artwork’s counterfeits. Methods of molecular spectroscopy (infrared and Raman) are convenient for identification of most organic colorants. Both methods could be used non-invasively allowing analysis of artworks (e.g. drawings) where sampling is not possible.
