Binding Media in Tempera Paintings by Czech Landscape Painters at the End of the 19th Century

  • Original language description

This research aims to address the question of whether Czech artists from Julius Mařák's Studio in Prague prepared their colours themselves or whether they used tube paints available on the market. Our further objective was to find out whether the self-prepared paints had any impact on the processes of degradation in these artists' works. Using various analytical techniques, we carried out a comparative survey on selected artworks by Antonín Slavíček, Otakar Lebeda, and Antonín Hudeček in the collection of the National Gallery Prague. The experimental analyses showed that the artists used paints composed of a broad variety of proteins, polysaccharides, oils, and resins, a material diversity uncharacteristic of factory-made paint patents.
