Mannerist and Baroque Sculpture in Bohemia and Moravia 1550-1800
Original language description
The summary catalogue has four sections that provide a critical review of all of the Mannerist and Baroque sculptures owned by the National Gallery in Prague. The entire collection was created rather recently, beginning in the third decade of the 20th century during the tenure of the gallery’s director Dr Vincenc Kramář. The original artefacts in the catalogue are complemented with several modern copies of Baroque sculptures as well as Baroque statues that various owners lent to the Old Masters permanent exhibitions. The catalogue consists of 521 entries (520 pages) where large-format reproductions present the best-quality examples of domestic sculpture from the late 16th to the late 18th century. An extensive collection of polychrome carvings and stone statues by Matthias Bernhard Braun (1684–1738) represents the most valuable core of the National Gallery collection as well as the summary catalogue.
