More than twenty-five years after the opening of the permanent exhibition of Asian art of the National Gallery in Prague at Zbraslav Chateau in 1998, a new conception of presenting the Collection of Asian Art is now being established, this time in Salm Palace on Hradčanske Square in Prague. This also presents us with an opportunity to evaluate part of the cultural heritage managed by the NGP in accordance with the current knowledge and approaches to the history of the art of Asian cultures, with regard to both exhibition and publication activity. This publication familiarises readers with the essential character of the collection, as well as important objects of Asian art at the NGP. It is therefore not a catalogue raisonne. In accordance with the exhibition conception, it purposefully characterises the collection material of Asian origin at the NGP in thematic units according to the method of interdisciplinary and intercultural studies. This approach takes as its basis interdisciplinary knowledge, which itself is based upon not only the history of art but also on Asian studies, encompassing the language, history and the social-religious-cultural realia of specific Asian countries or geographical regions.
