An Unknown Philosopher by Peter Brandl and a Model for Simeon
Original language description
The contribution presents a previously unknown painting by Peter Brandl in The Hermitage in Sankt Petersburg, depicting a philosopher counting his arguments on his fingers [3]. Stylistically, this work joins the two paintings in the National Gallery in Prague, Brandl’s Bust of a Discoursing Apostle and Simeon with the Infant Jesus, all painted in Brandl’s expressive, gestural ‘rough’ manner. I suggest that Brandl’s finger-painted pictures were not created in the ‘rough’ manner because they date several years earlier than the paintings in the ‘rough’ manner and a preserved finger-painting by Cornelis Ketel is executed in quite a fine manner. I present also a mezzotint print by Abraham Bloteling (1640–1690), which was Brandl’s model for the head of Simeon in his painting Simeon with the Infant Jesus. Brandl may have painted his pictures in the ‘rough’ manner to help pay off his debts faster.
