From the 1920s, the ČKD enterprise endeavoured to break into the aircraft industry. In spite of all the efforts, the company succeeded only partially in breaking the monopoly of Avia, Aero, and Letov aircraft factories. The ČKD company collaborated withforeign aircraft producers in France and Great Britain, and made their aircraft ? the engines in the first place ? under licence. The company made an effort to introduce, for example, the British Rolls-Royce aircraft engines into the Czechoslovak Air Forces. In September 1938, shortly before the Munich Crisis, the ČKD's managing board approved purchasing one Hawker Hurricane Mk.I fighter and option for its licenced production. However, due to the political situation, the purchase did not take place.
