Photography has been around for over 180 years and, since its inception, has produced an enormous number of photographic images. A plethora of various cameras, accessories and gadgets have been invented at different stages of its development to help photographers in their efforts. Other devices, machines and tools were designed to process photographic material. The technical and chemical principles of the photographic process changed over time and the necessary equipment and tools had to evolve, too. Photography required advanced knowledge of technology, physics and chemistry. Until almost the middle of the last century, photographers had to be proficient technicians, engineers and chemists all in one. For a long time, the history of photography was, therefore, primarily the history of photographic technology. As the guardian of industrial heritage, the Czech National Technical Museum (NTM) is particularly well placed to showcase the development of classical black-and-white photography and the wet process. From the very beginning, its photographic and cinematographic collections have been built with the main aim of documenting and preserving the history of photographic technology, while always placing emphasis on illustrating the technical heritage with works produced using specific techniques. The NTM’s collections contain a wide variety of objects that embody the development of photographic pro-cesses, devices, equipment and tools. In addition to its photography and cin-ema collections, including important examples of daguerreotypes, calotypes, ambrotypes as well as a priceless series of chronophotographs, the NTM’s Archive (ANTM) holds many photographs representing the work of most of the major Czech photographers. All active photographers inevitably took photo-graphs, documenting the progress of technology and industry. Thanks to the NTM’s extensive collections and archives, this publication has been able to guide the reader through the entire history of classical photography. The col-lection objects featured in this book cover all periods from the prehistory of photography to modern technology. The aim of this book has been to show the historical development of photographic processes and the technology involved in them and present photography in all stages of its evolution.
