Glass in Brno and Moravia ca. 1200–1550. Catalogue of Glass. Volume II
Original language description
Two-volume book represents a unique achievement in the field of research into medieval glass in Moravia. It tries to process and evaluate the finds of medieval hollow glass of the 13th – 15th centuries from Brno and Moravian region. The glass objects from archaeological excavations at the historical core of Brno had been so far processed and published selection-like only. However, the assemblage from Brno appears by its amount and quality one of the most abundant and significant units within the Middle-Danubian region (about 2000 items). Until around 1400 there occurred mostly imported glass, above all from Italy probably, to a lesser degree from the territory of German lands. Since the mid-14th century also some domestic products appear which got predominant after the year 1400. The processing of finds from Brno and Moravian region not only allows the elaboration of a typology and chronology with supra-regional validity but also undoubtedly contributes to solving problems of origin of imported glass and trade connections in the Middle Ages. While the first volume of the book assesses the archaeological finds of hollow and window glass and small glass items within the individual historical periods, the second volume is a catalogue of the finds of glass with over three thousand specimens of vessels. The catalogue also features the assessment of their individual shapes. It's accompanied by rich picture and photographic documentation and in addition, it's supplemented by a CD with a catalogue of features listing over 300 sites which yielded glass, i.e. the contexts of the individual glass items.
