  • Original language description

The topic of the publication “The Mad Silkman. Zika & Lída Ascher. Textiles and Fashion“, which has not been covered before, is the theme of two generations of the Jewish family Ascher who were significant members of the Prague textile industry and who were at the same time closely connected with local and foreign art scenes. The five-year long research work was carried out in the Czech Republic, Great Britain and the United States. It was focused mainly on the personality of Zika Ascher and his wife Lída and their personal and professional lives, set against the backdrop of the dramatic history of the 20th century. The aim of the research was to connect all the aspects of their activity into one piece and to provide a comprehensive picture that exceeds partial field views. Much attention was given to the years in between wars. To cover this field, the extensive research was held in the State Regional Archives in Prague, Prague City Archives and also in the press of that time. The study of the period after World War II until the 1990s was based on many years studying the Ascher family archive stored in the United States. The result of the publication is the return of Zika and Lída Ascher as important personalities of world textile design to Czech historiography, personalities whose meaning was purposely concealed in the former Czechoslovakia after 1948.
